right im not the worlds best on a pc so here goes i'll try to be as clear as i can, im sitting beside the pc just now on my laptop this is whats happening.
I PUT THE RECOVERY DISC IN AND TURN PC OFF, THEN I TURN IT BACK ON AND IT SAYS PRESS R TO DISPLAY RECOVERY OPTIONS (THATS A JOKE)
2 I PRESS R AND IT SAYS STARTING SYSTEM RECOVERY -
ON THE LEFT HANDSIDE OF THE SCREEN THE TOP SAYS CHOOSE SYSTEM RECOVERY OPTION (BUT THIS IS NEVER HIGHLIGHTED) IT STARTS THE ONE BELOW SAYING HARD DISC PREPERATION, THEN THE MSG COMES UP AS EXPLANED ABOVE

I would say since it can't format the partition, that the hard drive has failed. It also can't find the files necessary to do a repair because they are stored on the hard drive too.

"i have done this system recovery loads of times"

Loads of times? Why "loads" of times?

If you know the make of your HDD, go to the manufacturer's website, download the diagnostic software, burn to a disc, then boot off the disc & run the program.

"lorraine_macleod" whats the make and (full) model number of the problem pc/laptop?

... I take it that you have already saved your want-to-keep files(?)

... similar problem solved:
(removed the main partition then try the recovery again)
(make sure that you leave the recovery partition "intact")
