No printers recognized, spooler problem?

Specs: Windows XP SP2, 2.8GHz, 512MB ram
Between printing jobs, my machine stopped recognizing both my hp laserjet and inkjet printers. I checked control panel Printers and faxes, and both were listed. Then I refreshed that window and they were gone. I tried to reinstall the printer, but I got a message saying the spooler service was not started. So, I went into cmd prompt and manually started the print spooler. Then I went back to control panel and all the printers were listed again. However, once I hit refresh, all vanished and the spooler service had apparently stopped working in that short amount of time.

I have also tried reconnecting the printers while the spooler service should have been running. services.msc confirms that the spooler service is running and set to come on automatically.

In short- try to print, it tells me I have no printers. Try to install printers, it tells me spooler isn't running. Manually start spooler, then it mysteriously stops. Repeat cylce. System restore has also been of no help.

Thank you very much.

Not sure if this MS fix will work but it certainly gives the system a good clean out:

Might pay to back-up the registry or export the keys to your desktop before venturing in there,
