Specs: Windows 7
got a dell notebook from a friend since both my laptops have been disabled, 1 from internet security 2010 and the other from xp internet security. the dell i just got wasn't working according to my friend but i booted from the disc drive and ran the reinstallation cd windows xp professional service pack 2. everything seems fine. disc contents said there would only be 1 icon on the desktop after running (recycle bin) and it is there. cannot do anything else with it. control panel>add or remove programs, nothing there, no programs. try to run my router disc to setup internet connection and wired ethernet adapter isn't recognized. tried to run driver for the adapter and it runs but still says there is a problem with it. message says This device cannot start. (code 10). try to create a new connection, connect to broadband conn. that is always on and get msg. Your broadband conn. should already be configured and ready to use. then when i check connections i only have the 1394 connection which says connected. any ideas how to fix this mess or is this laptop ready for the junk yard?
thanks, hiway

"is this laptop ready for the junk yard?"

No, you just need to know how to fix it. Same goes for the other two. Why would anyone give you a laptop to work on if you apparently can't even remove a simple infection (Internet Security 2010 & XP Internet Security)?

How to remove XP Internet Security 2010, Antivirus Vista 2010, and Win 7 Antispyware 2010

As for your friend's laptop, after you reinstall the OS, you need to install all the drivers (chipset, video, audio, network, etc). Since they're apparently not on the disc, go to the Dell site & download them. If you're asking about the Inspiron E1505, you'll find the drivers here:

my friend didn't give me the laptop to fix, he gave it to me because he bought a new one since he nor the tech he spent $300 with could fix it. you are right however in that i can't even remove a simple infection. i don't pretend to know much about programming computers and i expected some ridicule when i saw that most people that post questions on here are pretty knowledgeable about what they are doing and all i know really is how to use a pc. when i was in college, fortran 4 was the computer programming class to take. that should tell you that i am no spring chicken so to speak.

as to the simple virus i can't remove, it is on a toshiba satellite laptop. i didn't have anything saved on it that couldn't be replace so i ran the recovery discs that came with it. after running disc 2 briefly and at about 78% completed, a message comes up that says cannot continue, file missing which is<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. i can't get it to run in any modes, safe, with command prompt, etc. so i don't know how to re-load that file. when i first got the virus, i did the things i found to do on the net like run taskmgr and end the processes plus loaded the malwarebytes program and ran it plus regedit, etc. but it didn't get rid of it.

anyway, i do appreciate the help and if anyone has a fix that can be explained to a simpleton like myself, i would greatly appreciated any advice.

thanks again,
