no desktop icons after avg PC tuneup i downloaded avg PC tuneup and didn't get to run it before it expired - when i un-installed and restarted my PC my desktop had no icons, (no windows explorer) and it seems to have caused windows to crash or be sort of erased
? reinstall windows XP? or an easier way? safe mode is bad too - cant copy files to save before reinstall
Ian :)
Have you tried system restore (to a date before program was installed)? In future avoid all tune-up and registry fixing programs. There is always the risk that they will screw things up because the software mix is different on every computer.
Best to get advice from forums if you have some issues.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
thanks for reply Derek, Yes I tried system restore - no good. you are so right about running such programs - I should've known better. AVG did same thing to that PC months ago & only solution was to reinstall XP and drivers.
I've got some so-called solutions on other forums but no good.
Ian :)
Not sure if I can help but for the benefit of others can you say: Did system restore not run, or did it run but still no desktop icons?
Can you give a summary of the fixes you tried otherwise you might get them all again?
Presumably this was the first thing you tried:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330170Did you search for the name of some of the desktop icons - they may have moved off into another folder?
You will be able to look at the HD using a Live Linux CD produced on another computer. These only use the CD and RAM. If your own files are there you will be able to save them to a flash drive.
Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
I don't know why you would have installed PC Tuneup in the 1st place? The loss of desktops icons appears to be a somewhat common problem. Did you try the simple fix - Right click on the desktop > Show desktop icons?
Yeah riider, your last bit is a lot more concise than the page I posted on my link in #3. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
Thanks again Derek! no system restore did not work neither did your link advice. I can open in safe mode and do all the things suggested but it always come back to defunct desktop on full start. not to worry it happened before and my mate is rocking over who is computer tech who has fixed exact same problem before - reinstall XP & some drivers.
I'm never running one of those type of programs again - though I ran pc tuneup on both my other PCs with no problem.
Again thanks again dude - you're a champ. :)
Hi riider! thank you for your reply and you are so right!!! the right click - show icons does not work. it works in safe mode but not full mode.
again thank you very much, I appreciate your attention dude! :)
I will reinstall XP & some drivers and that will work - like last time.
I have 3 PCs and the one thatis down is my junk one anyways.
Ian :)
