No data on EUHD - aborted FAT32-NTFS convert

January 23, 2010 at 22:23:40
Specs: Windows XP
A friend of mine has a 500 GB external HDD which is Fat32. There was around 250-270 GB of data on the disk. He tried converting it NTFS (I'm not sure what software he used). After he started the process, the time remaining showed 16 hours. 16 hours is too long a time and so he stopped it (again, how long into the process did he stop, I don't know). But now, the disk contains only empty folders. The used space is the same as before, but there is nothing in the folders. There was some important data on the drive (say 20-25 GB) which he wants to recover. What do I do in order to get the data back?

The problem is that the conversion process was stopped before it was finished. therefore the data structure on the drive is corrupted. there is no easy way to retrieve the data.

I know the recovery would be troublesome. But there might be a way to start with. Please suggest something!

Try using testdisk. Read instructions before using. Get it at the link below.
