Did you delete the Vista partition, create a new one, format it, THEN install XP?

If you installed XP over Vista all previous user names and passwords will have been lost. They will need to be recreated. You have to be logged on as an Administrator to do. At the very least you will have an Administrator account which was configured during the installation process.

well this installation did not have an administrator account, apparently no directory existed for any account. is it possible the previous users (same names entered) still had a pssword stored in the bios? I didnt see this, and did a format, install. reinstalled again, same problem, again, different hard drive, crash, again, now asking about networking, administrator account, good, things look different, login as admin, no password, success! I dont know why it finally took on the 10th run, deleting bios by removing little battery at least 5 times, trying 3 different hard drives and 3 different memory configurations, but I am glad its working. The battery is bad, I had to remove it to do the installs without shutdown.
