Specs: Windows XP, 2GB
So I crashed the HD in an HP Laptop....replaced it, got my XP disk, and ran it at boot up. It ran the file set up went to "loading windows xp" then quickly crashed to a blue screen saying there might be something wrong with my HD. Ran Bart with exact same results. Tested the HD with several tests to confirm it was ok and it is. What the heck??

test the ram. Download memtest86, make a bootable cd and test the ram. Some hard drives have functional issues.....which is to say when it works it tests fines, but may otherwise not be fine.

Have tested and removed / replaced RAM as well as this hard drive and two other drives. All tests confirm these things are functioning properly.

Nope..... it is a Lap Top so has a plug mounted in the slot that the drive mates with.

That leaves the controller or board issues, or a real icky problem that tests ok, but isn't.

"Nope..... it is a Lap Top so has a plug mounted in the slot that the drive mates with"
Yep, that is pretty normal, the cable runs from that mating plug, you probably have a cable running to the MB.

If it did not have sata support....it usually gives you the message there is no hard disk to install on, and you have to press f6 then to add the sata driver to recognize the drive, but blue screening and crashing.....have you tried another xp disk?

I ran into this problem when replacing a hard drive in a friends laptop, there was a jumper you had to bridge to get it to work.
Try bridging the "Limit data transfer to 1.5 Gbits per second" jumper.

Before you installed the HD, did you check to see if there was a jumper on it? It may have come with a jumper that is on a setting for slave or maybe there should be a jumper. Just a thought, hope it helps. Best of luck!
