You may have disturbed something inside.

Did you unplug the computer before removing the CMOS battery?

What, if anything, happens when you try to start the computer?

Thank you very much for the replies. I am grateful, but baffled now that it has decided to boot after numerous attempts. I had shut everything down, and un-plugged before installing the new battery. Went through same routine before reopening case and checking all the connections I could find, including seating ram, all to no avail. After several times, I re -installed old battery, and still got no results. On last attempt, I used new battery again, and this time got warning page to re-set bios settings and time, and that battery power was low. Hit F1 and continued, and now it's running fine. I have no idea what was wrong, or what might have corrected it.
