Solved .NET framework Updates for XP Home Edition

November 5, 2012 at 06:55:54
Specs: Windows XP Home, Pentium (R) 4CPU/Ram2GB
Due to a virus I had to wipe clean the hard drives and reload the XP Oprtng System. .NET framework 1.0 and 1.1 pre-loaded.

Windows update has updated my system with SP3 and all security updates - except that updates relating to NET framework 2 and 3 start to install and fail to complete.
Is my system configuration preventing the installation of these updates? If so, where do I start looking? MS Administrative Tools?

why don't versions 2 to 4 show up in 'Add Remove Programs'?

Probably because they are not there which would would explain why the updates are not installing. You cannot update something that doesn't exist.

The different version are not compatible with each other and you will only need ,NET frame work 2, 3 & 4 is you have applications that need it If you don't have any such applications, and they will soon complain if they need it, you don't need.NET Framework 2,3 & 4

Try downloading them directly rather than using Windows Update:

Hi riider,

I have tried three websites - Cnet, Softpedia etc - without success, in an attempt to download NET frameworks v2 and v3. My PC gives me a message that they cannot install. Frustrated, I went to my Windows folder to see what the Microsoft.NET folder contains. In it I see that in addition to v1.0.3705 and v1.1.4322 (which are shown in 'Add Remove Programs'), the Microsoft.NET folder shows files with contents for v2.0.52707, v.3.0 and v3.5 and v4.0.30319. Is this why I cannot install the downloads?

If this is the case, why don't versions 2 to 4 show up in 'Add Remove Programs'? Does this mean that although v2 to v4 are present, they are not functioning? I am at a loss to reason this out.....
