Hi
I want to know something, if you go to the recovery console on XP would you lose all the data you've got on your hard drive if u put in the command fixmbr?? Earlier my PC crashed while i was on Skype later on when i restarted the PC and when it finished loading to the desktop, it didn't go to the desktop it came up with a blue screen which said unmountable boot volume what does that mean?

If you are using the cd to boot off and select repair you will see a list of commands.

fixmbr replaces the boot sector......(Fresh copy).and thats all....everything else should be untouched.

You might also want to run fixboot after fixmbr. Is the hard drive recognized in the bios ?

mmmm... perhaps first set about safeguarding/recovering your data?

Boot with knopppix or ubuntu disk and access the HD that way. Then copy your files (data etc.) to an external HD and/or optical-media. Verify the copies are truly accessible too on at least one other system. Then set aobut recovering a working system?
