Solved need to change the XP Pro boot process

October 14, 2011 at 10:23:29
Specs: Windows XP, 512K
When I installed XP Pro on my Dell 610 laptop, for some reason (me not paying attention, probably) it set the boot up process to stop at "select a user" (2 choices).
I want it to boot like my desktop, that is, to the Welcome screen, then to the desktop, with no stop at the user select screen.

Is it possible to make that change without reinstalling XP? I tried User in Control Panel but the solution did not seem to be there.

"user selection" IS the welcome screen so your decription is a bit vague as to what you are talking about.

Sounds like you want your user account to autologon.

Google xp autologon for the registry entry to edit

No, it is not. It's one of the options, but not the only one.

I'll repeat, this is what I want:
"I want it to boot like my desktop, that is, to the Welcome screen, then to the desktop, with no stop at the user select screen."

✔ Best Answer
Install PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI), then use the Logon > Autologon feature

Thanks. It looks like the Power Toy TweakUI suggestion will work. The Power Toys suite would not install...kept getting a 1920 error during the install, something about do I have authority to start services.

But I was able to DL and install Tweak UI by itself, which is all I really need. Again, thanks for your help.
