Need help with software video issues

Specs: Windows XP
I'm not sure if I have this in the right topic or not. I'm trying to help my brother with an issue that has recently started with his machine. He has a P4 (not sure of processor speed) with 512M of ram. Within the past few weeks, everytime a browser is open the monitor screen blacks out, then comes back on. When it comes back on he has to wait for the desktop to recover, before he can do anything online. This process takes about 10 minutes. It only happens with the browsers, not any other program. I've checked with him and the only changes he's made was to download the newest version of of ZoneAlarm's Extreme Security about 2 months ago.

Which browser does he use, IE6/7/8, Firefox, Chrome or someothers?

Not very sure about the cause. Maybe he can choose another browser and see if it helps.

It is possible that he needs an updated video driver, but I would check with the zone alarm people or uninstall and see if the problem goes away, it does sound like zone alarm may be the cause. You are using zone alarm's firewall I assume, did you disable the windows firewall? You cannot run two software firewalls at the same time without conflict problems. You can try another browser, at least until you resolve this issue, but I would not just ignore it if the other browser does work, it still is a problem, and may have other effects later.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I apologize for not answering sooner. My brother just uses 2 browsers, Firefox and Avant. This issue happens with both browsers. I did update the video driver and it didn't help. He does use the ZA firewall, the windows firewall has been disabled. Since this issue only happens with the browsers, I've been wondering if he needs more memory, as he's only got 512M. Could this be the problem?

I figured out what was happening with browsers. They were cycling through the color quality under the display settings. The computer black out and was taking so long to recover because of the low memory. I added 2 gigs of memory for him and that stopped FF from doing it, but it didn't stop Avant. It actually start do it twice. Once you would start Avant, the machine would black out and switch to 8 bit color and the screen would recover, then it black out again and switch to 16 bit and recover, then it would black out and go to 32 bit and recover. I've never seen a browser do that before. He told me to uninstall Avant to fix that problem.
