You can't format from within Windows, you need to use some sort of bootable disk. However, assuming you DO format the hard drive, where do you go from there? Which OS are you going to install to replace Windows XP?

Well if you format the drive everything will be gone, Including XP.

If you do not have an operating system install disk then the best you can hope to achieve is to uninstall things you no longer use then perform a cleanup using something like CCLEANER slim. And you will want to hope that uninstalling unwanted progs does no damage.

"i plan on keeping windows xp i just want everything gone"

Formatting completely erases the hard drive & prepares it for the installation of a new operating system. We can tell you how to format, but without a Windows (or Linux) disc, you'll be dead in the water. Maybe formatting isn't what you want to do?
