Specs: Windows XP, p4 1g ram
I have two identical pc's here at home. HP Pavillion a732n. Both have Windows XP. One has recently quit booting, I tried the built in recovery but it still says missing a C:\Windows\System32\System ... I dont have recovery disks so alot of online advice has left me short and Im not very pc literate technically atleast. I did manage to save our pictures and files by connecting the bad pc's hd onto my tower and just copy and pasting the files over, that worked. Any advice on how to proceed fixing the MBR or whatever is wrong with it?? Thank you !

If you have i386 ( about 500mb ) on your drive, you have the XP operating system.

Almost for sure, you are going to need an XP CD to fix your problem.

Here some tools that will probably ask for it, just a matter of pointing it to where XP ( i386 ) is.

Avira AntiVir Rescue System

eScan Rescue Disk

If the computers are truely identical then I suggest you create the restore set by using the working PC. Then use those disks to attempt repair of the faulty PC. Without knowing any history of the PCs I can't say for sure that you can still create the restore set but if you are the original owner and never made them then you should be able to.

Look at the link below.
