My word documents are opening to a blank page

Specs: Windows XP Professional, 3.4ghz/3gb
I recently had to reformat my hard drive. Before reformatting, I hooked my main hard drive up as a slave and trasferred my files off of it onto another temporary hard drive. Once I got my main hard drive reformatted and Windows XP reinstalled, I transferred all my files back on to it. However, I had some Word documents that somehow became corrupted during the whole process. When I open them now, they just come up blank with no text on the screen at all. I don't get a "your file is corrupt" message or anything like that...they just open up to a blank document. I also tried opened them up on the temporary hard drive that I had transferred them onto in the first place, and I get the exact same thing. When I click properties, it still shows that the files are the same size as they were before...but when I open them there is nothing. Is there anything I can do to get the text back? I have tried all kinds of trouble shooting techniques that I've read about on the internet, and none of them work. Whenever I open up the documents...I still get nothing but a blank page.

I think you forgot to mention which version of Word created these original files, and which version of Word is installed on the re-formatted drive. I guess I also missed the part of your post that said that you can successfully create, save, and re-open new Word files...
