my thinkpad runs very slow... suggestions

Specs: Windows XP, 290 MB
slow boot up time. Can't play any video clips without freezing. How do i correct this?

You only have 290MB RAM, what do you expect? You need to make your system as lean as possible. Make sure you have a lighter weight antivirus program - that means, not McAfee or Norton/Symantec. And you need to prevent as many programs from loading at startup as possible. If you use AIM, Yahoo, iTunes, etc, none of that stuff needs to load as soon as you boot up. Start them as you need them, end them when you're done. Learn to use MSCONFIG:

I agree with mickliq. Try upgrading your RAM if possible. Also disable "Automatic Updates" since they install programs in the background using up quite a bit of memory.

I agree with the ram issue if that low.

XP tends to suffer like every other MS OS except dos. It gets all sorts of errors and bloated after you run it for a few years. It may be that it is way past time for a clean install.
