My task bar turns gray, the sound doesnt work

Specs: Windows XP, pentium 4
I have a windows xp, that was working well until a virus hit. While trying to get rid of it one day, i don't know what i did, the virus was gone. I was really happy but it was short lived. When I opened my computer I noticed that my taskbar was that of windows 98, I'll say, gray and old looking and my sound wouldn't work. I restarted the my computer and I was happy again because the taskbar was back. However, i noticed my desktop had reverted back to the original picture and that when opening up things the everything was this thick blue...The sound was working so I said hey that's fine. Well, again the taskbar would suddenly change color to gray and the sound would be gone..."There are no active mixer devices available" and i don't know.

I tried system restore won't work and sometimes it says application not found. I tried f8 safe mode nothing. I'm lost and I would gratefully appreciate anyone's help. Sorry for writing a lot and Thank You for your time.

It sounds like the windows theme is just reverting back to classic sometimes. Just do this when the taskbar turns gray:
1. Open Start>Control Panel>Display
2. Switch to the Appearance Tab
3. Under Windows and Buttons, choose Windows XP Style

I don't know about the sound problem though.
