My laptop screen went out and I need to get information off it, and don't know how to do it. It is a 1998 hp pavilion zd7000 windows xp
it was diagnosed as the screen is bad, and I have an old monitor so that it requires a round plug to hook up to the laptop
"1998 hp pavilion zd7000 " Huh ?
I suspect that either you quoted the wrong model, or the wrong year.
The hp pavilion zd7000 notebook is a lot newer than 1998 - it was probably made in 2008.If it WAS made in 1998, or in any case
Go here:
http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspxScroll down a bit.
Look for the similar label on the outside of your computer.
Quote the specific model number - that's at the end of the first line.
Quote the Product number - that's on the third line.
.......If it IS the zd7000, or one of the many models in the series:

CTO = Configured To Order
Yours may not be specifically zd7000 CTO but it should be very similar.
