My HDD is acting funny.

Gateway notebook / MX8715

Specs: Linux i686, 2GB
My first HD crashed because i had a total of 8GB left on it and i was using it as Ram. But i got a new external HD and riped it apart to get the HD out and i put it in my computer and tryed to install Windows Xp pro, but it says to check the HD cables and the power. But when i tryed Linux (Ubuntu). It started right up with to prob and installed. The BIOS says theres a HD. But windows does not. And my computer takes a Sata and the external is a Sata. If u have any ideas please help. Thanks!

Check drive settings - is it Master-no Slave; or cable select. Although as bios sees it this is not likely to be the issue here.

What make drive involved - and is it OK for the laptop; not all are from some accounts - even though it appears OK with Linux?

How large the drive; version of XP sp involved?

Do you get as far in XP setup as supplying SATA drivers for XP?

Is your OS Linux or Windows? As trv asks, did you press F6 at the Windows install screen in order to install the SATA drivers?

And, why did you install a new drive when you had trouble with the first one? Do you mean you had an 8 Gig pagefile?
