My Documents folder missing from My Computer

April 3, 2013 at 13:04:04
Specs: Windows XP
Issue: My Documents folder disappears from My Computer and only the Shared Documents folder remains.
Cause: Programs like Advanced SystemCare (several versions older and newer), Ask Toolbar and maybe others that modify the Sam and Security files of the registry( as they shouldn't).
Solution: A system restore. If you want to keep the installed program then create a new restore point, run cacls "System Volume Information" /E /T /G BUILTIN\Administrators:R in the command prompt to gain access to the System Volume Information folder, open the folder of a previous restore point, go to the "snapshot" subfolder, copy the _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM and _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY files to the "snapshot" subfolder of the latest restore point (the one that you have just created) and then do a system restore to this restore point.

The fix is much more simple - uninstall Advanced System Care and stop using all registry cleaners

Lay off toolbars too - most are scams or worse.
