thank you grasshopper the hard drive is working ok. i took the pc to best buy and one of their tech tested the drive and it is ok.he told me it is the os and i need a recovery disk. my pc is about 7 years old and out deated by micro soft and don't make the recovery disk for the window xp anymore. the retail version is very exspensive. right now i can't aford to buy one because i am disable and living on a fix income and the price of a retail version at stores like best buy target is like $199.00 if i can only find a cheaper version or some one with the original disk know any one or where i can a cheaper one

Microsoft doesn't make the disks. They are supplied by the manufacturer. Since you didn't list your system specs, go to the manufacturer's website and see if they have the disks available.
