My computer isn't loading properly.

Specs: Windows XP
My computer will not boot properly. It worked fine in the morning, when I got home from work it was off and I tried to start up and it displayed "PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable, PXE:Mof: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent, Disk boot failure, Insert system disk and press enter." I inserted the system disk and hit enter. Same messaged displayed on the screen. I looked for answers on forums and found that it could be a bios boot sequence problem. I got into my bios settings and everything looked alright to me. I also read that sometimes pulling the battery for the bios for a couple of minutes and replacing could help reset the bios. I tried and I still got the same message. I read somewhere to restart the computer with the disk in the drive, did that and new message popped up stating the hard disk was not found and could not perform system recovery. I thought all hope was lost but i checked anyways. I removed my hard drive and slaved it to another computer. All my information is still on my hard drive. I thought maybe it could be the cable connecting my hard drive to my motherboard or a faulty connection somewhere. I took my computer outside and blew out the dust. reconnected my hard drive and my computer will now boot past where it was before, but now it stops loading when the windows xp screen is displayed. I tried restarting the computer same thing happens. I then inserted the system disc and the computer asked me if I wanted to perform system recovery from the disc and to press "R". I pressed "R" and then pressed "R" again when I was prompted to. The computer started the recovery and then froze again when the Gateway screen was displayed. I tried starting in safe mode still nothing. Any ideas as to what I should do. I want to save extracting all my information from my hard drive and resetting the system as my last resort if at all possible. I just did that about 6 months ago.
