My CD drive will not open.

Dell / Dimention 3000

Specs: Windows XP
When I put a paper clip in the small hole, the drawer starts to open and immediately closes. So the next time I do this, I pull the CD drawer open and it immediately keeps closing. Does anyone know what the problem is?

A new drive in Australia will cost about $90, I reckon you would be much the same in the US. Open the tower and locate the drive bay, remove the cable at the back of the drive, undo 40 small screws and slide the drive out of the front of the tower. Replacing the new drive is the reverse of the above.

"undo 40 small screws" ???? Make that 4 screws.

CD Drive $90 ????? Where are you doing your shopping? You can still get an IDE DVD Burner for under $50.... http://www.gamedude.com.au/

As far as opening the drive with a paperclip, do it with the power turned off and you will slide the drawer all the way out to retrieve whatever disk might be stuck in it.
