Solved MS Visual Studio Problems Open File

Microsoft Visual studio v.6.0 profession...
December 2, 2011 at 07:19:36
Specs: Windows XP Prof., SP 3, AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core QL-64; 2.10 GHz; 2,74 GB of RAM
When I click on "open file" in the files menu to open a file, that is not part of the opened project, Visual Studio crashes. This means, that the microsoft error reporting window opens (...has encountered a problem and has to be closed), there I choose the report option, but the application doesn't close: the window stays on the screen and is not responding. The process msdev.exe has to be killed in the task manager.
The same happens with "project/add files".
Everything seems to be fine with adding projects to workspaces or debugging existing projects. It is also possible to create new files, when a project is opened they are added to it, in any case the new file is stored on the Windows desktop. A copy can be stored elsewhere.
I have already de-installed and re-installed the Visual Studio but the problem stays the same, what can I do?

I would look at the event viewer for errors.

Hello guapo, thank you so far.

In the event viewer I find:

Faulting application msdev.exe, version 6.0.8168.1, faulting module devshl.dll, version 6.0.8168.0, fault address 0x0003eaed.

Following the Microsoft Link doesn't help : "Currently there are no Microsoft Knowledge Base articles available for this specific error or event message."

But when I google "devshl.dll" there are some search results which might be useful, I'll try these, if I don't succed with them I'll return here.

Hello guapo,
thank you very much for your help. Via google I found out that it is a known error in MSDEV which was solved in Service Pack 4 for Visual Studio, I downloaded the newest service pack and now the program works properly.
