MP11 hits slow-play spots--CPU spikes!

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 1.795 GHz / 2039 MB
(Product has nothing to do here)
I suddenly experience slow-playing spots where playing MP3 files with MS MP 11 seems to s-l-o-w d-o-w-n the play for a 3 to 5 second interval, about every 15 to 20 seconds of playing. This began without any changes being made by me that i can think of prior to the problem occuring for the first time.

Thanks much,

All the signs of something using the cpu. Have you scanned for malware/virus's? What are you using for this?

>Yes, I have scanned for virus-trojan-malware, but problem persists.
>Using: Microsoft Secuity Essentials (this seems to be a replacement for Windows Defender?); Clamware Anti-Virus (runs manually--does not seem to be TSR program); Spybot (ditto); also, once weekly or more often if PC seems slow, I run Eusing (free version) Registry Cleaner.
>I watched CPU performance when the s-l-o-w-d-o-w-n of the playback of music occurs, and indeed, the CPU usage spikes exactly coincident with the slow-play phenomenon. I have 33 processes running normally, but I am pertty certain that I was doing this before problem started.

Has anyone got an update on how to approach my MS MP 11 s-l-o-w play problem? is it possible that a faster CPU -- i.e. Intel Core 2 Duo, would help? I now have Intel "Core Duo" E4300 and plenty of RAM.

Thanks much,
