moving hard drive from optiplex to dimension.

Specs: Windows XP
have dell Optiplex with motherboard issues, nearly dead. have Dimension 8400, with no drive. moved drive from Optiplex to Dimension and NOTHING!!! machine lights up and fans run but nothing else. moved drive back to Optiplex and it booted up but shut down/froze when I clicked on icon..

Why would you assume that would work? If the chipset is the same series it may work but otherwise, probably not.

If the hard drive is an IDE type (wide cable) you may have to move the jumper on the back of the drive to match the original. If the hard drive is larger than 137GB and the computer is old the BIOS may not support the drive.

I suggest you run a hard drive fitness test on that hard drive. The issue with the computer is probably NOT the motherboard.

How can a motherboard be "nearly dead"? Either it works or it doesn't.

And that means the motherboard is bad?

As OtheHill mentioned, moving the hard drive depends on the 2 computers. For example, I moved a hard drive from an Optiplex GX270 to a Dimension 8300 successfully.

Also, do you even know that the Dimension is working?

great, now try to boot the 8400 and, get into the bios. (Probably f2)
if you can't boot to the bios, you have other problems.
