missing FAT32 configsys

Specs: Windows Vista
Windows XP - Missing FAT32 configsys

Black screen just shows this. The HP computer came without a boot CD or Windows XP disc. Any idea how to recover please

My own machine is a Mesh running Vista, but the problem computer is an HP running Windows XP which gives the msg missing FAT32 configsys. So any help would be appreciated pse as my daughter needs her computer. I'm IT literate but I haven't been able to recover it using the only disc I have a '98 start-up disc. I think the hard drive is trashed but if u think different would love to know. Thanks

Dunno about fat32, config.sys was removed by sp2.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

XP is *usually* installed on drives formated as NTFS, not FAT32. Are you sure it's FAT32 & not "system32\config.sys" or possibly "system32\config\system"? It's very important to post the exact error message. I don't know what you expected to do with a Win98 boot disc?
