MCE 2005 OEM will not install!

Specs: Windows XP MCE 2005, 2.8 GHz / 1 GB RAM
A friend brought me his computer after he attempted to run some Windows Updates and said it wouldn't start any longer. His initial request was to recover his family pictures, which I did by hooking up the drive as a slave on my PC and transferred the files. I tried to recover his Windows install (he was trying to install the SP3 update and it didn't work for him) but couldn't. Having no recovery disks, he purchased an OEM copy of MCE 2005 and I thought I'd simply reformat and install. It reformats and installs, but as soon as it comes to the Windows XP splash screen, the progress bar at the bottom freezes and will go no further. I've tried removing all hardware save the MOBO, 1 stick RAM, video, keyboard/mouse, and HDD to no avail. I tried a different hard drive and got the same results. I tried an OEM version of XP Pro SP3 that I have and it installed with NO problems. WHY CAN'T HE INSTALL MCE IF HE HAD IT BEFORE?!?!?!

The installation CD may have defects in the reading of it.

You could try to burn a copy of the CD to CDR. Use a slow burn speed and use file verification. After the CDR is done, try installing with that one. Or borrow and copy someone elses CD. You still need to use the key for your friend's copy.
