lower half of screen is a BSOD

Specs: Windows XP
I have two Dell Optiplex 755 PCs. I am using the one that's OK -- to report that my other 755 shows a lower half of the screen as a BSOD. I think it happened when I accidentally hit one of those F keys on top of the keyboard, probably the F12 key. Re-starting the PC causes the same problem. The OS is XP Pro.

That doesn't make sense. What's on the top 1/2 of the screen? Also, a BSOD generally has an error message on it. When you reboot, does the Dell splash screen display properly?

OK, it's not a BSOD -- it's simply a blue screen on the lower half of the display. The upper half seems to be part of the normal display.

When you reboot, does the Dell splash screen display properly? or is it also split? Trying to determine if it's a hardware problem or a Windows problem. Have you tried Safe Mode to see if the problem exists there too? Reboot & tap the F8 key.

Which part? Does the mouse pointer display as normal?

Just to clarify what you're seeing.

When you are viewing "anything", say computing.net, is the upper half of the display correct, and the lower half the blue colour associated with a bsod?

Is the upper part showing only the upper part of the web page (computing.net) correctly, or what?

I took the rig to a local PC repair shop. They ran tests to ck for a hardware problem. There were none. Then they went into the software, found the problem (corrupted files), fixed it and it works OK now.
