Looking for documentation on parsing variable

Specs: Windows XP
Hi,

I'd like to know where I can find documentation
on how to parse/truncate variables in batch
files.

For example, I have the following command in
one of my batch files:

ren %fileName% "%fileName:~9%"

I'm not sure exactly what the :~9% does and
I'd like to understand it better. If you can point
me in the direction documentation that will
explain it, please do.

Thanks,

techphets

At the Command Prompt enter SET/?

In the example you give "%fileName:~9%" would extract all but the first 9 characters of the variable %fileName%
