Login Password Box No Longer Displays @ Boot

March 30, 2010 at 15:31:44
Specs: Windows XP

I no longer have the password prompt box displayed @ login next to User Icon. I can click user name (only 1) and it pops up and I can enter it and login, but it isn't the way it was prior to doing updates, etc.

Has anyone else had this strange behaviour and if so, is there a fix to get it back to default behaviour because I can't find anything on the web addresseing this odd behaviour on a fresh install with full updates?

It could be one of the updates causing this behavior. Try doing a System Restore.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Yes, updating to sp3 changes some of the default setting. Restoring would defeat the reason of updating our computers to keep them more secure. If your referring to the log on password box with domain credentials or local, it can be reconfigured in > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options > Under interactive.

Couldn't find anything having to do with password box in the Local Policies, etc. However, I did a system restore & it worked. Brought back the box. I still would like to know what caused the change.

Thanks all for your input

See my replies at this link ----
I fixed mine to show that person.
Normally I do the TAB key twice, to get login box displayed.

I did check but the suggestions didn't apply - first off I'm not running any of the Framework net's, etc - not running SP3 - am running WinXP Pro SP2 - problem started few days ago. The way I prefer it is the Welcome screen appears with my user name and an open password box. Few days ago it changed to Welcome screen user name - no box - double tap Tab or click on name & box appears. No big deal, I just prefer it when the box appears with the screen. I system restored to 3 days ago and got it back - but I still want to know what caused the change.
Thanks for your input.
