Log on and then Logs right Off

Specs: Windows XP
I managed to load what I thought was a security patch this morning and now am having the problem noted above. (thank God for my lap top), I have checked dozens of posts and have been with Dell too. So far I have not been able to break the code. When I do the CD recovery action and get to the console and type in the commands I've seen listed, all the tips said when complete you should be able to log right in and that will allow you to take additional actions.

I am thinking I am following all the steps listed, is it possible that I might have caused issues when I was asked if I wanted to overwright and I said yes.

I am not worldly when it comes to this stuff and my wife is going to kill me.

Any help would be welcome

have you tried unchecking automatically restart when going to the safe mode screen?
That way you should get an error message as well as the bsod. If you can do that, post the exact error message.
