Solved List of Windows Updates not generating for PC with XP SP3

Specs: Vista Ultimate, SP2, 3.0Ghz/2Ghz
I went to Windows Updates to get updates for my older computer with Windows XP SP3 on it. The progress bar keeps moving and "Checking for updates for your computer" is displayed. That's as far as it goes; a list of updates is not generated. I rebooted and tried again; it did the same thing. I am aware support is ending April 2014 but I just downloaded updates for my other computer which also has XP. Anybody ever have this problem? Never had this issue before; this is the first time. Could there be some malware preventing updates? Or is the Microsoft Updates site suffering from a denial of service attack? Thanks.

Could your AV, firewall or browser be blocking the download? Try to change some settings or try a different browser.

✔ Best Answer
More than likely you got impatient & didn't wait long enough. Go to Start > Programs, & click Windows Update. When the screen comes up, click Custom, then wait it out - 15 min, 30 min, whatever it takes.

Sometimes, some of the necessary DLL-files are not registered well anymore.
Therefore, you can copy and past the beneath batch commands to a file and store it to the Desktop. Give it a name like reregdll.bat and run it by doubleclick.

---SNIP---

@echo on
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll /s
regsvr32 dssenh.dll /s
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll /s
regsvr32 initpki.dll /s
regsvr32 jscript.dll /s
regsvr32 mssip32.dll /s
regsvr32 msxml.dll /s
regsvr32 msxml2.dll /s
regsvr32 msxml3.dll /s
regsvr32 qmgr.dll /s
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll /s
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll /s
regsvr32 sccbase.dll /s
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll /s
regsvr32 softpub.dll /s
regsvr32 vbscript.dll /s
regsvr32 wintrust.dll /s
regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll /s
regsvr32 wuauserv.dll /s
regsvr32 wucltui.dll /s
regsvr32 wups.dll /s
regsvr32 wups2.dll /s
regsvr32 wuweb.dll /s

---SNIP---

After that, reboot the computer and try to update it.
Maybe that helps.

Yes, cause these DLLs are normally registered in registry and may get lost by some registry cleaners or whatever.

The reregistery process only makes sure, that the DLLs, necessary for the Windows update process, are listed correctly in the registry.

Paulsep,

I tried running the bat file to register the DLLs and it had no effect whatsoever. I also have a laptop and I am experiencing the same thing. I think the issue is with Microsoft and there's probably too little XP users out there getting updates that they haven't noticed or been notified. I thought maybe there isn't any updates; but you should at least get a message saying so instead of an endlessly moving progress bar!

Heres another Updates fix I've seen. What do you think?

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
