Laptop won't power by battery- replaced battery and same.

Specs: Vista, AMD Athlon X2/ 4g
I bought a new laptop battery for a friends laptop as it wouldn't keep charge-at all. The new battery won't power the computer either. Remove battery and it shuts off. I swapped the motherboard out and had the same results so I know the problem isn't the MB ,bios, or a bad battery connection as that is built to the board. Of note is I noticed windows was acting weird-slooow. Antivirus wouldn't lauch so I uninstalled it (TREND I believe) and loaded Windows Essentials. Scan had 9 major virus and trojans. System runs factory new now but still won't run off the battery!?! My theory is a virus screwed up the HP battery monitoring software on the hd. The computer acknowledged the battery and said it was charging and at 47%. (the percentage has been steadily rising since,to 53%) but still refuses to run soley on battery power. Thoughts anyone?

You said the system runs factory new now. Does that mean your wiped the drive and did a factory restore? If so the HP battery monitoring software on the hard drive would not be messed up by the virus.

I have had brand new batteries from HP go bad before, it's possible you got one that is bad out of the box. Can you send it back for a new one?

If you go to the drivers section on HP's webite, they have battery diagnostics software you can download. You might give that a try and see what it reports. Make sure you do the advanced test.

"Factory new" as in speed. A system restore using the HP Recovery Partition is actually next on my agenda. She wants time to back-up some files before I give that a shot. As far as the battery goes it's good (as was the original!). Checked both on another HP and worked fine. Also have upgraded to the newest HP Advisor to no avail. Next!!
