November 3, 2011 at 01:20:24
Specs: Windows XP, Intel Centrino Duo
Adobe hijacked my computer and all extensions, Now they all read ,INK Error Log shows delete ARP cache; UPS not configured properly. Windows can't open anything , System Restore doesn't work etc, etc. Where's my Mac? I've wasted too much time on viruses. Sony Vaio Laptop, XP with SP3. Thanks for your time, Richard

B3klein, pure SWAG, possible you've got some sort of nasty (virus, worm/trojan, etc.?). Be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean, other times, it gets missed entirely.
If you need to clean one, Malware Bytes (can't provide link, Google for location) seems to be the preferred remover, but I've run into a few it couldn't handle. Superantispyware seems able to handle all comers. (Info only. I’m not paid for recommendation. WARNING! FYI, a full scan on mine takes over an hour.) can do the job and you can get it free @:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
among other places. They have a Vista compatible version if needed. Dunno about Windows 7 or later.
If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update any cleaner prior to running. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux.
Disable 'restore' after cleaning and run it again (to remove any nasties living there, restart after cleaning) so the nasty doesn't get put back should you later ‘restore’.
The restore thing is critical. May not be your deal at all, but won't hurt anything to try.
If all else fails, you have the option to reset things to factory settings. Sorta Draconian, but...

Hello Ed, thanks for the quick response !! How's Texas? I've lived there for many years. What's SWAG?,Anyway, I've currently got a Malwarebytes download and a COMODO Geek Squad set-up program on my Desktop that I downloaded before the virus grew, I just can't open or run them.COMODO has been great , I must have over-ridden a warning from them in my haste to burn a CD.Adobe first took over and changed icons on everything that it got control of.Later file extensions changed to .Lnk. Now System Restore doesn't work, most of Control Panel is dead, Safe Mode with Command Prompt doesn't accept commands. Could I force feed it a downloaded program via SD Card or Memory Stick/Flash Drive? Other suggestions maybe? Thanks.B3

B3klein, Texas is as always, HOT & DRY. SWAG = Scientific Wild A** Guess.
I think I recall that you can put a bootable cleaner on a memory stick, but I don't know how. Maybe someone else does? Google?

Download and Run the EXE fix from here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_ass...

With luck this should fix your program issues, if so let us know if any issues remain.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hello all, thanks for the replies. At this point I can't open and run anything. And even tho' I have internet options set to download to Desktop I can't find most of my downloads there.Firefox is hiding them somewhere else. Everytime I try to open anything , even Firefox , I get a message that Windows can't open the file do I wish to have windows find it on the web or choose from a list.Almost nothing opens in Control Panel and I never am offered to Run any of the downloads that I have, only Cut or Copy.I was supposed to hook up with a COMODO Geek Buddy but could't open and run their program that they e-mailed to me. I even saved it to a cd and tried to run that in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. I have NO idea what to do now.I've reached the pinnacle of my limited knowledge. No System Restore, no Add or Remove Programs, no opening and running of Spyware. What can I do but wipe it clean and lose tons of music files and photos? Thanks again to everyone, B3klein

There's still a possibility for the exe fix if we can get it across from another computer somehow.

Before that go to your download for MalwareBytes and see if you can change its extension from exe to either bat or cmd. If you can do this then double click the renamed download and see if it will install. Ed might well be right, there could be a
virus about.

If it does install you might have to do the same name change trick to the mbam.exe
file in the MalwareBytes folder (Program Files) to make it run from there.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Carry on with my suggestion in post #6. I'm in the UK so it's well past midnight and I'm clocking off. For info, this is my suggestion to get the EXE fix across:

On another computer download the EXE fix zip file. DO NOT RUN IT but save it to a known location. Go to that location then double click the zip file and extract the reg file it to somewhere you can find it. The next trick is to try to get the extracted reg file across to the dud computer. You could use a flash stick or CD for this.

If you can see the reg file in "My Computer" (flash drive or CD drive) then all you need to do is double click it to make it run and hopefully improve things.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hello Derek and thanks. I could change the extension for malwarebytes but it still wouldn't install. I also downloaded the win exe file that you suggested to another computer and put it on a CD, but windows said that the CD drive was not accessible.I'll get a flash drive tomorrow and save my files before I send the Sony back to 2006. Thanks everybody for your help, I don't feel so alienated anymore. Richard "B3" Klein

Just curious as to if you have tried running an online virus scan? If not here is one: http://go.eset.com/us/online-scanner
