Does it work from Start / Programs?

... similarly, does it start if you double click the actual file "iexplorer.exe "
which is in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

If it doesn't open from there something got screwed up with the install.

Re original post, the shortcut to IE should normally arrive automatically, without you having to create it.

We haven't got much to go on:

Can we assume the answers to both #1 and #2 were no?

When you try to open IE8 does nothing happen at all or is there any error message?

Did you save the downloaded file somewhere then double click it or did you simply run the download from within IE? If it was the latter then try it from the saved download. We need to know the exact procedure used.

If you revert back to IE7 does that work?

uninstall IE8 if it is in add/remove and then install IE7. That should work for you. For some reason IE8 is crammed too full of security to run on an XP machine. In my repairs I just set them back to IE7 and it works great!

Sorry noxpurt but your answers to questions are too sketchy so I'm outta here.

IE8 issues on XP must be a software mix thing because my XP runs IE8 just fine.
Hope IE7 works out for you.

Have given up on IE8 and have downloaded IE7. It works just fine. Thanks to all for advice and suggestions.
I did have to put remote on desktop manually.
