As the CPU in your Gateway PC is 64-bit capable, you can install either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows

x86 is simply the "family" name for 32-bit, as opposed to x64 meaning 64-bit.

However, I cannot locate any Gateway drivers for the 702GE, it doesn't seem to be supported any more, so you'll need to stick with the pre-installed Windows version.

Try deleting all partitions on the hard drive first, as something on it could be interfering with the install process. You can delete partitions from within Windows Setup.

There is no such thing as an 86 bit system.

Anyway, you most definitely want to install a 32-bit OS on that computer. 1GB is not enough to comfortably run 64-bit Windows 7; it's a bit marginal with the 32-bit version.

Actually X86 refers to both 16 and 32 bit architectures.

Gateway doesn't list the specs but I found them here:

The exact CPU model isn't listed but it's supposedly a 3.2GHz P4 w/HT. 32-bit? With only 1GB RAM, you should stick with a 32-bit OS anyway, even if the CPU is 64-bit.

And notice that the HDD is shown as SATA, so unless you preload the SATA drivers OR have an XP disk which contains the SATA drivers OR change the HDD setting in the BIOS to IDE mode, XP likely won't install.
