IR port on Laptop

Specs: Windows XP
I have a portable bar code scanner that uses either an RS232 or IR port interface to transfer data from and to a PC.

My Lenova laptop has no rs 232 port, but it has an IR port. I do not know how to transfer between the two devices. On the bar code scanner the menu is easy to follow, but I have no instructions for the laptop. How do I make sure the IR port is active. More importantly, how do I setup the laptop to receive the data in a file like notepad? Any help would really be appreciated,.

Lenova or Lenovo ?

Lenovo has very good support.
You should be able to find the User's or Owner's manual for your laptop easily on their web site.

If not, tell us what specific model it is - that's on it's label. and may also be shown on it's bios Setup screens.

You can buy inexpensive USB to RS232 (Serial port) adapters (they have circuitry between the connectors).

"...how do I setup the laptop to receive the data in a file like notepad? "

What data - what type of file ?
