If you have sufficient restore points you could use System Restore to go back to before October 24th.

What security and virus checks did you run?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

No. System restore did not give any restore point on the date I ran the cleaning programmes nor on the date a month earlier.
However, I have moved on to Google Chrome which is a lot quicker.
I will keep on trying to get to the bottom of the problem by and by.
Many thanks for your replies.

OK. Two further suggestions to consider:

From IE go to "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced". Press the Reset button and see if that helps.

If that doesn't help go to "Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs" and make sure the box is ticked to show MS Updates. If IE is listed then uninstall it, which should set you back to a previous IE version. Now try the IE8 download again. It might be a good idea to restart the computer after the uninstall and before using the download.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
