Internet connectivity issues

Specs: Windows XP, 1gb
Hello everyone,

Problem: When loading webpages, blank pages often appear with status "done". Multiple refreshes are required, and pages load slowly with the status "connecting to..." which was not the case previously. Even when accessing default router gateway, it is slow.

My diagnostic attempts: Wireless usb adapter not the cause as problem is replicated using lan cable. Other computers on the router are working fine.

Events prior to problem:
1)Ran recovery console, "chkdsk /p" and "fixboot" to repair endless booting loop.
2) Used "Ccleaner" program to remove temp files and repair registry errors.
3) Defrag, but aborted after 18 hours as progress was only 30%.

Please help.

Nondescript, sorta a shot in the dark, but... Could your problem be the index.dat file? A common ailment is a file called 'index.dat'. It's like a log file and keeps a record of every site you visit on the web. Empty, it's 32K, but it can grow HUGE. It's a protected file and can't be deleted by normal methods. CCleaner can get rid of it (not to worry, it gets rebuilt EMPTY on the next boot.) Know you've run CCleaner to purge your temp. files, perhaps you need to add to it's list of chores?

Ed, thanks for the reply.

I tried what you suggested and it sort of works! I say sort of because the problem is fixed for IE, but not firefox. I googled and found that firefox does not use index.dat. How can I fix it? (can't stand IE)
