Solved Internet browser not opening

May 24, 2013 at 00:54:57
Specs: windows xp
I have just re-stalled Windows XP along
with SP2,SP3 and all the latest
updates, including IE8, but now when I try to
open the internet browser it does not
open except for a quick flash on the
monitor. How do I fix this?

Did you re-install all the drivers including the network card/chip drivers?

You would have had to download IE8 so was IE working OK until you installed 8?

✔ Best Answer
If you installed IE8 (as per #2) then uninstall it from Control Panel - Add/Remove. This will revert back to the XP default browser. If that works then download IE8 and Save it as a file rather than running it. Double click the saved file to install IE8 again. This works best because the browser isn't running when you install IE8.

IE6 working okay, but any attempt to
install IE7 or IE8 gives same result.

result. Also tried with IE7.

That's odd. Assuming your XP is 32 bit, is this the file you downloaded for IE8:
IE8-WindowsXP-X86-ENU.exe (16.1 MB)

MS made IE7 available on cd. IE8 had to be downloaded (unless that's changed in the last year or so). You might want to check to see if you can still get the IE7 cd.

So with each installation, did you uninstall any previous attempts?

I take it the installation goes OK but afterwards IE won't open? Try right clicking on its desktop icon and try OPEN or START WITHOUT ADD-ONS.

Does this mean you've given up on IE7 or 8? If so then best leave IE6 in place in order to get Windows Updates.
