Internal card reader and usb ports not recognized any more!

April 5, 2013 at 19:30:15
Specs: Windows XP
Life was fine and dandy until one day I took my smartcard out of my camera and put it in my pc to download photos. Nothing happened. Download window didn't open, nor is my PC recognizing anything in the slot. I then connected the camera itself to a usb port. Again, nothing. It's as though nothing is connected. I can plug my ipod in the the same port and it works just fine.

At this point, I have no way to down load any photos!

If an iPod works okay in the USB port, there is nothing wrong with the USB port.

The memory card in the camera has probably failed. A new memory card is required.

You might be able to use

There are other recovery tools out there, however this one is free.

Your card reader could had failed and is now shorting out your USB buss. If this is a desktop, take the side off your computer and find the cable that attaches your card reader to the computer and unplug it.

Have you ever been able to view pictures by plugging the card into the card reader in your computer?? My best guess is no you have not. You have an XP based computer and it is a good bet that the card reader you have is an SD card reader. The card will probably be an SDHC format. This card will not work in your computer due to the fact that the format is too new for your reader. The fact that your camera is not recogniozed by your computer is likely a driver problem.

It is still possible to view and download your pictures. Go to your local electronics store and purchase an SDHC card reader. It plugs into a USB port and you will read it as a removable drive.

Let us know how you make out.

Must be something else. I'm trying to download photos from 3 different cameras...hence...3 difference smart cards.

terri - Yes, I could always put any of my cards in, view and download the photos. I could also plug my different cameras in using USB ports, view and download. I download a lot of photos. One day as usual I tried to download and the PC refused to recognize any card in a slot and any camera connected via a USB port (tried all ports). I think tried my ipod in a port. PC recognized it. I also plugged in my external hard drive to a port and it was recognized.

It's like my PC is boycotting anything related to photos! So crazy!

Use a flashlight and look in the card reader slot, see if there are any bent pins, any pins that could be touching.

Fixed a similar problem yesterday. Go to the device manager, right click "computer", select properties, hardware tab and then device manager if memory serves me correctly. You should see all the devices listed. go down the list, do you see an yellow exclamation marks? If so, it needs a driver installed. If not,go toward the bottom and to USB and click the little plus sign to expand.....there should be a bunch of "USB ROOT HUB, right click and unistall them one by one until all the root hubs are not showing. When you restart the computer give it a bit because it will reload the drivers for the usb root hubs. see if it works after that. If it is a missing driver report back, but I suspect uninstalling/reinstalling the root hubs will work.
