Microsoft does not support installing any version of Windows to an external drive and will tell you it is not possible.

If you want to install Win XP in a virtual environment, Win 7 Pro and Ultimate support it under the name XP mode. During installation I believe you can change the installation path to point to the USB drive, though I am not 100 percent sure about it.

Dunno why suatcini got a negative vote. It is a good solution.

Actually Windows 8 is supposed to run from an external drive. I have not tried it yet.

You can, if you insist, find a way to run xp from an external dual booted.

Personally, I'd use the space for a virtual machine or two.

I meant that someone is pushing a negative vote to your reply above.

Currently it is minus 2 votes. It should be more like plus 2 votes. I am saying that your answer is correct but the vote count makes it look like a poor answer.

Everybody may have different views and opinions on the same thing based on his past experiences. This is normal.

On the other hand, it is not important what you are saying. But it is important to make sure the addressee understands correctly what you are saying.

I have to improve myself in this respect.
