I am changing my printer from parallel to usb port. how do I do that?
Windows XP
HP laserjet 2420 printer

Usually if you use the same printer then you just plug in the usb and it works. Be sure to set default printer to the new usb install.

I think you should be able to just disconnect the serial port and plug in the USB and be done. If not, go to Printers & Faxes, open up the Properties of your printer, go to the Ports tab, then deselect the serial port and select the USB port.

Although the printer is a parallel port, I believe the description in the printer's Properties > Ports tab will call it a serial port. Serial or parallel, it doesn't matter. The point is you'll want to deselect it and select the USB port instead.

I wanted to double-check and verify the printer does have a USB port (in case it was real old). If it didn't, we'd need to look for a converter. Fortunately, it does.
