January 29, 2009 at 06:23:03
Specs: Windows XP, Athlon 3000+/2 GB RAM
Sometimes when I insert a DVD or CD into my burner my PC will restart.
Also sometimes when I open certain DVD burning programs it will restart.

Any advice on ways to fix this ?

Thank you.

If I had to guess I would guess you have a failing power supply. Emachines are known to have crappy PSUs.

So it could be the power supply that is causing the PC to restart when only 1 or 2 specific software applications are started ?

Imageburn and Starburn cause the restarts and sometimes closing the drive with a DVD in it will too.
Alcohol 120% doesnt read the drive (for some reason) but at least doesn't restart the PC. However Windows and CopyToDVD (and some others) DO read the drive and don't cause a restart and work just fine.

Why would a power supply only be affected by a certain 2 progs?

I could see the DVD burner because of the power draw when closing it with a DVD.

Thank you for your help too.

Well, as I said, it is a guess based on your first post. Faulty RAM could also cause reboots. You should get errors though.

I don't know if Emachines have PC Health in the BIOS or not. Boot into the BIOS (setup) and see if you find a page with voltages on it. If so, look to see if the actual voltages are close to what they should be. 12V, 5V, 3.3V. Don't be concerned about any negative voltages. While you are in there check system temperatures.
