i want to increase the ram to 256 mb from 192 mb

How about you provide some information about your system. Like make/model numbers. I might also say that increasing to only 256mb will make little difference to a system that probably runs slow as cr@p. You should be looking to max out your ram to the most your motherboard can handle.

You probably already have 256 Mbs of RAM with 64 Mbs being taken up by the on-board video.

64+192 = 256

To make any difference you will need to increase by 256 Mbs giving you 512 Mbs and 448 Mbs of usable RAM.

You need at least 512MB RAM for XP to perform reasonably well, 1GB or more would be better.
