Win XP - Word/ IE8 very slow to Open/Close also locks up + Word fails to close properly - I suspect old routine created by original C++ 2008 & MFC90? fault, now updated. How do I identify faulty routines & correct?

Will the "fix-it" routines work when C++2008 no longer exists on the machine?

I have to restart computer when it gets too slow

Used for general writing, accounting & Internet downloads

CHKDSK, CCleaner, AVG9, etc run frequently

Is Windows XP SP3 up to date with patches? If Office up to date with patches? What version of Office are you running? Also, "slow" would probably be accurate description if you're running XP with only 256MB RAM. 10 years ago? Maybe. Today? Not so good.

Hi sdFox7, Thanks for your reply.

I am not sure how to update Word (2003 version?) and SP3 should update automatically.

The problem affects Explorer and IE as well as Word.

I am prepared to accept "slow" response due to old equipment, but it is so slow that sometimes I have to refresh to get "archived" files to fully open (if it will).

I sometimes get a report that JAVA is disabled in spite of my attempts to re-install it.

I may have caused part of the problem by having to manually delete a couple of programs but CCleaner etc report that Registry is OK.

Unfortunately, while I used to fix the old (huge) mainframe computers, I am a novice iro PC software.

I shall look into your suggestions re updating programs

Thanks again

Many programs do not run correctly, if at all, with Java 7. Are you running Java 7? You may want to revert to Java 6.

Use this page to check:

According to my experience, viewing the page with Java 6 Update 32 tells me: "Congratulations! You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 32)."
