IE8 freezes while surfing

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 3 GHz / 3582 MB
Hi everyone,

I recently formated my machine as i had to replace a couple of hard drives to bigger capacity ones.

Everything currently runs fine but i am having some issues with surfing the net.

I have performed various speed tests using speedtest, net and my average download speed is 7.2mb and average upload is 2.3mb my ping is 20ms.

I installed IE8 on my machine after format, installed all Windows updates etc. But i have an issue with browsing, for example, say for example i am surfing on and click on 'Windows XP' forum, the green progress bar will show with one bar coloured, this will then sit for around 40 seconds and then move to the next bar and so on. i have to litrally hit refresh about 6 times and then immediately the page will load. one then again when navigating through the site it will do the same.

This happens with all sites not just CNET.

i have exhausted the obvious things like checking for spyware, trojans etc, i have the following installed on my machine.

ZoneAlarm Pro
Spybot s&d

I have run all these programs and they find nothing on my machine. I have also checked my startup items and have reduced them down to only a few things.

my computer is connect directly into my wireless thompson router with an ethernet cable and i have replaced the cable to see if that was the problem.

It wasnt much of an issue before as i thought i could resolve it, but now i am very confused and its frustrating me that i have to refresh the page many times, especially when im buying things online and the payment screen freezes i have to hit refresh which has caused two or three payments to be made...

Just so you know i have also tried to use Oprah 10 but this was also the same. i have checked my router settings and firewall settings, but i am not and expert so if someone could suggest or offer me some guidance i would appreciate it so much.

I see that you have enough RAM (as that is the source of many problems with the newer browsers) Make sure that you have only one antivirus program active at this time since this could establish a conflict that would slow you down considerably. Try checking your RAM with Memtest to make sure that a bad memory segment is not your problem (retest with one stick at a time if you come up with any problems to find the bad one). Download the newest driver for your network card (or motherboard if onboard) to make sure that is not the source. And check your security settings in IE8 tobe sure they are not too high. You can try Firefox, but it doesn't sound like that will probably help in your case. That is about all I can think of for now and post back your results to help further, or to help someone else out there.

"I recently formated my machine as i had to replace a couple of hard drives to bigger capacity ones."

Formatting should not have been necessary. The old drives could have been imaged to the new drives. A reinstall of all your drivers would be required after a format.
