Solved IDT HD Audio Codec fails to install with Code 10 on Win XP

June 23, 2012 at 20:15:06
Specs: Windows XP, B960 / 2GB
I am trying to load Windows XP Professional SP3 on Dell Inspiron n5050 Laptop. The config of the laptop is Dual Core B960, Intel HM67 Chipset. I could get all the drivers from the net. However IDT Sound drivers refuses to work. Installation fails with code 10.

The details of IDT HD Audio Codec are as follows.

Ven_111D, Dev_76D1, Subsys_10280504, Rev_1002\4&39084755&0&0001

I have scanned the forums & have tried various solutions suggested. Have tried almost all the drivers for IDT & Sigmatel.

Have done the following.

1> Installed Windows XP Prof SP3. Did complete Windows Update & tried various drivers.
2> Installed Windows XP Prof SP2 ( as suggested in one forum ). Later installed K888111 Microsoft UAA drivers. Tried various IDT / Sigmatel drivers.
3> Installed Windows 7 Professional ( for testing ). The laptop gives sound on the basic HD Audio drivers of Windows 7. However IDT HD Audio Codec drivers provided on Dell Support Website do not load & IDT appears with a exclamation mark in device Manager.

Forum members have been able to solve the IDT issue, however I am stuck with this problem for the last 2 days. Request support...

After trying all drivers available on the net, gave up on Windows XP. Have loaded Vista Business ( the product key was available in the paper license ) and all drivers are working well.

Thanks all for your help.

Why are you installing XP on a model that only came with Windows 7 on it originally ?

" Installed Windows 7 Professional ( for testing ). The laptop gives sound on the basic HD Audio drivers of Windows 7. However IDT HD Audio Codec drivers provided on Dell Support Website do not load & IDT appears with a exclamation mark in device Manager."

In the Dell Inspiron n5050 downloads...

Driver Details.
IDT 92HD87B1
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...

The most frequent reason for drivers not installing correctly is you did NOT follow the installation instructions - READ the Installation Instructions there !

DO NOT install sound drivers when Found New Hardware pops up !

I searched on the web using: IDT 92HD87B1 XP drivers

One of the "hits" :

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...

Compatibilty - they also support XP.

Follow the Installation Instructions !

Uninstall any drivers listed for it that did not work in Add or Remove Programs BEFORE you try installing other drivers !

Thanks for your reply.

The model came with Ubantu Linux originally. The reason I am trying to install Windows Xp is that, I have MS Windows XP paper licenses and would like to avoid expenditure on Windows 7 licenses.

Have READ & followed the driver installation instructions carefully. I have already tried the link in your post. Does not work.

Dell often lists drivers for all the possible devices for the series of computers, some of which your specific model (mboard) may NOT actually have.

Did you have an unknown sound device listed in Device Mangaer BEFORE you attempted to install the IDT drivers ?
............

You MUST install the main chipset drivers for your mboard, if you haven't already done so - they are NOT built into XP.

Intel HM67 Express Chipset Family
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...

Main chipset "drivers" are mostly, or ALL, *.inf files that inform the operating system about the specific capabilities of the main chipset.

If you don't install them, you'll have problems .

E.g. The USB 2.0 support XP with SP1 or later updates has built into it is NOT installed in Windows until AFTER the main chipset "drivers" have been installed.
