If moving HDD's was simple, then everybody would be doing that.
You have to do a Repair Install of XP.

Also, what exactly have you done - moved a hard drive running windows 7 to a machine that was running XP (so you're expecting windows 7). Or vice versa (so you're expecting XP). As Chuck said - you'll need to repair reinstall if its xp. If its windows 7, then there is no repair feature (when the o/s won't boot).

I expected to have to do a repair...the windows 7 hard drive to the laptop that was running the xp hard drive went fine...(Dell 9300). The move of the hard drive running xp to the laptop running the windows 7 hard drive...not so good(IBM lenovo R51).

I'm now confused - you expected to have to repair xp - so why haven't you?! Do you know how to do this?

I expected to have to do a repair on both....but I also expected the Windows 7 to be the most difficult...tried a repair, even put a clean hard drive in and tried to re-install windows 7. I did notice that maybe the previous owner may have manipulated the bios some how or it's bad. It says I have 1gb of RAM when I only have 512mb. (IBM R51).
